About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

What is considered "transit area" of Kunming airport for 24-hour direct transit?

I have a 10 hour stopover in Kunming on the way from Kathmandu then Shanghai to US. I understand I am eligible for the 24 hour direct transit. What is considered the "transit area" of the airport? When I flew into Delhi, I was restricted to a small part of the airport that was considered the "transit" zone and could not go out to other shops, lounges, etc. in the main part of the airport. Is this similar in Kunming and can I apply for a more liberal visa if so? Thank you.

You can apply for a temporary entry permit and leave the airport to visit Kunming.
