About:FAQ of Chinese Visa Application
My wife and I will visit Shanghai only (no other cities etc.) for four days. Visa required?

If you fly to Shanghai from USA, and after staying for 4 days there, you will fly to a third country or region rather than USA, you can enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai. No entry permit will be required then.
Otherwise, a tourist L type should be applied in advance.0
