About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

London -> Shanghai -> 3rd country -> Shanghai -> London

Is it possible to book a return flight from London to Shanghai say for a two week period, and then book a return flight from Shanghai to a 3rd country for a period within the initial two week period so that only 5 days are spent in Shanghai and still qualify for the Visa free transit?
As an example:
London to Shanghai return flight - 01/10/16 - 14/10/16 - 14 days
Shanghai to 3rd country (i.e. Japan) return flight - 04/10/16 - 12/10/16 - 9 days
Total time in Shanghai - 5 days

I am in a similar situation, flying round trip from New York to Shanghai 1/26-2/10 but traveling from Shanghai to Manila 1/30-2/10. So I will only be staying in Shanghai for a total of 3 days at the very beginning of my trip. Would this qualify for free transit?

Did you have any luck finding out whether it qualifies?
