How long you stay in the third country doesn’t matter, John. As long as your immediate points before and after Mainland China are in different countries or regions, you can have a 240h transit visa-free in China.

Your layover in Japan can be literally long just an hour. Indeed, 240 hour visa free transit scheme requires that the immediate points before and after mainland China have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau), but it does not care how long will you stay in each of those two immediate points and what will be the nature of your layovers or in other words whether you will be in Japan just for a very short layover even without entering Japan or you will arrive in Japan for a year long stay. In other words, you can proceed with your travel plans with absolute peace of mind. Have a nice visit to China.
