Obtaining a chinese visa with an emergency travel document from the UK consulate in Sydney

Dear Sir/Madam,
I shall be travelling to China for a short business trip in September. My UK passport has expired and will not be renewed before I have to travel. Can I use an emergency travel document issued by the British Consulate in Sydney to apply for my chinese entry permit? I am a British citizen resident in Australia.

I look forward to your reply.
Sincerely
Katharine
