About:Telephone & Cellphone in China

Am I limited if I use an unlocked I phone from US?

We are moving to China, and have iPhones. A friend who lives in China told us we should buy phones there. And that our iPhones are limited in certain things, and can't reach 3 or 4 gigs. Even if they are unlocked and use a provider in China. Is this true?
