Visa or 24 hour transit free time

I am going on a cruise ship in October which docks in Shanghai for one day. I am not getting off the ship. Does the 24 hour transit free time apply to me. I think the rules don't stipulate how I enter China (I.e airline or ship) therefore I am hoping to save the cost of a visa, as I am not setting foot on Chinese soil. The ship leaves Shanghai on the evening of the same day it docks and sails finally finishing the cruise in Hong Kong, when I fly back to Australia.

Margaret, if so, you may be eligible for the 24 hour direct transit in Shanghai. But you’d better confirm that with your cruise ship.

Thankyou Mary. The cruise company are insisting on a visa....I am thinking it is because of the profit made through shore excursions. Thankyou for taking the time to reply. Have a good day.
