About:China Visa Application in UK

Do I need to pay for the permit allowing me to stop in Beijing and Shanghai

After seeing the free 72 hour transit, I wondered if a cruise which stays less than 72 hours near Beijing then 18 hours in Shanghai would fall outside this category and therefore require a visa. I guess one will have to fork out the extortiante amont for Visa and charges?

Yes, as you will stop in two cities, you can't enjoy the 72 or 144 hour free transit. So you have to get a normal entry permit at the CVASC office in advance. The fee for all types are the same, so it's best to apply for a two-year multiple-entry permit. It costs £151 per person.
