About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

allowed to a stop in Shanghai without visa From SFO to vietnam but not allowed for a return trip?

I flew from SFO to stop in shanghai on the way to vietnam with a waiver and no passport or chinese visa with no problems. But now i am unable to return to the shanghai as a transit to go back to the US. Why is this?

Well if you don't give more details nobody can help you.
Why didn't the airline let you board in Vietnam?
I am sure they told you a reason.
You held an Vietnam passport?
If so you are not qualified for the 144h transit in Shanghai (just for the 24h transit).
You have a valid visa or a resident permit for the USA to return back?
