visa needed for Australia to Shanghai by air then after 3 days by ship to South Korea?

If we arrrive by air from Australia into Shanghai, leave after 3 nights by ship to Tokyo, are we eligible for the 144 hour exemption? Are the airlines aware of thsi new regulation>
