144 / 72 Hour Visa Shanghai- Aust passport holder

Depart from GC Aust. to KL/ Malaysia to Shanghai- stay 4 days. Then Shanghai to KL stop over, then GC Australia - all on Air Asia. Can I qualify for 144/72 hour free transit. I want to go shopping in Shanghai. I lived & worked in Shanghai for many years. Thank you - Annete

Annette, sorry, but you cannot enjoy the free transit in Shanghai because you will fly back to Malaysia after stopping in Shanghai, even though it’s just a stopover. In principle, you should fly to a third country rather than the last one you fly rom. So you need to apply for an entry permit in advance, or change your travel route.
