About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Vietnam to Shanghai to USA

I am flying from Vietnam to USA, transiting in Shanghai for about 9 hours. Can I visit the city for sightseeing? If yes, what kind of visa would I need to apply before my trip? I don't see Vietnam listed in the list of the 51 countries.

According to what you said, you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit in Shanghai. So no entry permit is needed.
You just need to apply for a temporary stay permit at the airport and it is free of charge. Afterwards, you can leave the airport for sightseeing in the city.

Quan, you are right. It also applies for Kunming. You just need to make sure that your total transit time in PRC is less than 24 hours.

So according to the ticket, I would arrive Nanning, China at 7:30 pm and then depart from Shanghai to New York at 7:30 pm the next day. That should qualify me for the 24 hour direct transit?
