Can I use the 72 hour layover in Beijing without a visa?

I will be traveling from Honolulu to Hong Kong, via Beijing.

Glen, if you fly from Honolulu to Beijing and then to HK, without any stop in other mainland cities, you can use the 72-hour free transit.

Glen, if you travel like that and your layover in Beijing is less than 72 hours, you can also enjoy the 72 hour free transit in Beijing.
