Hi, I suppose you do not need to apply for the Chinese visa if you have a layover in GZ from USA to Kathmandu as you can enjoy 72 hours visa free transit. During the layover, you are suggested to transfer to downtown and explore some popular sites like Yuexiu Park, Dr. Sun Yatsen's Memorial Hall, Ancestral Temple of the Chen Family, etc.
