Hi there, I'm a Us citizen arriving Beijing on 7/2 and leaving Beijing for Shanghai on 7/5, then leaving Shanghai on 7/8 back to USA do I need a visa ?

Yes you need it.If you wanna use the 72h twov in Beijing you have to leave Beijing to another country (other as you came from) not to another chinese city.
