South African Passport in transit for 7 hours

I am flying from New Zealand to Venice via China on a South African passport. On my return flight I will have a stop over in China for about 8 hours before departing for New Zealand. Am I allowed to leave the airport to do some sightseeing?

Yes, you are allowed to leave the airport, but you need to apply for a temporary stay permit upon arrival, which is free of charge.
