I am travelling on Australian passport and have a single entry visa. I wish to do a side trip from China into Macao. Is it easy to get a re entry visa back into china at point of departure in macao? If so... any advice? Cost?

Steve, I’m afraid it’s not easy to get it from there if you don’t have Macao residence permit.
If you want to travel like that, you are advised to apply for a double-entry visa in the first place. And it will cost AUD 139.5.
Or you can go to other county such as Thailand to apply for mainland China visa. It will cost 1,600 baht.
