144 hr Transit Without VISA in Shanghai ?

Hello,
My husband and I will be traveling from LAX to Tokyo (NRT), staying for 5 days, then Tokyo (NRT) to Shanghai (PVG) for 4 days. When we fly out of Shanghai (PVG), we will have a 4 hour stopover in Tokyo (NRT) and on to LAX. But, the way our flights were booked they are roundtrip LAX to Tokyo (NRT) and roundtrip Tokyo (NRT) to Shanghai (PVG). Even though our flights are booked as roundtrips, our final destination when we leave Shanghai will be LAX (ie: LAX-NRT-PVG-[4hr stopover NRT]-LAX). Do you think we will qualify for the 144 hour Transit Without entry permit(TWOV)? Thanks for your help.
