During that period, a clan often contained 20~30 members and relatives were not allowed to get married. So, different clans would exchangedfemale members to produce offsprings.1

During this period, families were matrilocal, meaning the men went to live with the woman's family and village after marriage. By and large women were the village leaders during this period. Women weren't "traded" to other villages.0
