About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visa free transit policy

So I understand that when you fly from USA, you must go to another country afterwards before traveling home. So what if you switched that order of travel, for example, if you were to traveled to Johannesburg, South Africa and then went to PRC, can you go back the USA?
