Visa requirements arriving by cruise ship

I have a US passport. I will be arriving in Shanghai via cruise ship from South Korea, final destination of our cruise. I will be flying back to the states the same day. Do I need an entry permit? Or does the new transit rules apply?

Julie, no, you don’t need it because you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit in Shanghai.

I thought so, but then read the rules that say must stay at port of entry. I interpreted that as I could come in through the port but have to leave through the port. i would not be able to fly home without an entry permit.

Julie, don’t worry! After you disembark from the cruise ship, you can apply for a free temporary stay permit at the immigration inspection office at the port, and then you can go to the airport to take the plane and fly home.
