About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Arrival from hong kong, can I use 72h policy

If I start my journey from HKG and transit via Guangzhou to DOHA. Can I use this privilege and stay in Guangzhou for 3 days without the need to apply for visa? I have US passport.
Also is travel must be on the same ticket or two different tickets can be used one for arrival in china and the other one for departure from china?
