Cherie, the flight from Hong Kong to Beijing can be accepted. The thing is you need to take a connecting flight from Beijing to another country so that you can enjoy the free transit facility in Beijing.

So my plan is to get a flight from Hong Kong to Beijing from 7th-10th for under 72 hours. Could I then book a one way ticket from Beijing to Dalian as onwards travel from the 10th onwards?for the visa free ticket to work.

Cherie, if you book a one-way ticket from Beijing to Dalian, you cannot use the 72 hour free transit because it’s not a transit. After transiting in Beijing, you should fly to a third country or region.
