If you go to Shanghai for 4 days from USA, and then go to Japan, you can make use of the 144 hour free transit. In this way, you don’t need to apply for an entry permit.

Dear, you don’t need to apply for the entry permit. Your travel route will be like this: US-Shanghai-Japan-Shanghai-US, and your layover time in Shanghai is less than 144 hours for both transits, so you can use the free transit in Shanghai. Don’t worry!
