Visa for Vietnamese & US Nationals in Viet Nam

We are a couple living in HCMC, Viet Nam interested in traveling to Shanghai for a few days holiday at the invitation of a friend (Chinese national). She is a Vietnamese national and I am a US citizen. Could you kindly provide what is needed to apply for a tourist L type entry permit? Thank you in advance for any guidance you can provide.

Stephen, both of you need to submit passport, a copy of passport, a filled-out application form attached with a half-length photo against a light ground, and the invitation letter from your friend and a copy of his ID card. In addition, you need to submit the residence permit in Vietnam and your wife may need to submit a proof of fiancial support.

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. If we decide to stay at a hotel during our visit, will a letter from my friend still be necessary?

Dear, if you can provide the round trip air tickets and hotel reservation, the invitation letter is not necessary.

Thank you again for your guidance. One last question, would I be eligible for a transit exemption?

Dear, if you transit in Shanghai for no more than 6 days, and then go to a third country or region instead of the one you come from, you can enjoy the 144 hour free transit there.
