About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

China Without Visa

I'm from the United States and want to visit Shanghai and Beijing. I was hoping if I could visit Shanghai for 144 hours, then I could take a train to/from Beijing during that time. However, I see you're not allowed to visit any other cities besides Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Would I get in trouble if I try to visit Beijing during that trip and how is it enforced? Otherwise, I can take a plane from Singapore-Beijing-Hong Kong-Shanghai-Delhi but it's not as convenient.

Richard, you won’t be allowed to take a train to Beijing from Shanghai when you enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai. Your passport will be required to show when borading on the train. You may apply for a normal visa at Shanghai after entry, but by the time you enter Shanghai, you should have an onward ticket leaving from Shanghai, Jiangsu, or Zhejiang.
If you travel like that Singapore-Beijing-Hong Kong-Shanghai-Delhi and your layover time in Beijing and Shanghai is not exceeding 72 hours and 144 hours respectively, you can make use of the free transit in the two cities.
