i quit a company which made me work on a student visa, now they want to cancel it

I've been working full time for a company ( in the education field) which promised to convert my student X type in a working Z type. They never did, so I decided to quit the job because I did not want to work illegally. Now this company asks me to meet them so that they can cancel my X type and going to pbs. I have a new job offer, and the new employee is serious about doing a Working Z type, but I need to stay in PRC for a about 45 days so set everything. What should I do? Should I ignore my previous company's request and don't give them my passport? In the end they should be worried about employing me on a student X type, I think they are only trying to scare me because I left, but can't really cancel my residence permit, right?

Frances, you can ignore the previous company’s request and don’t give them your passport. And then you can get the necessary documents from the new company to apply for the work Z type. You can convert your student X type to work Z type at the exit and entry administration of the local PSB. You are right. They are trying to scare you. Even though your residence permit is cancelled, you can apply for a 30-day tourist L type and after the 30 days run out, you can apply for an extension. Normally, they cannot harm you, unless you give them your passport. Unfortunately, this is a common practice by some companies in China that they believe foreigners do not have a complete understanding of their rights. Even in case of canceling a work permit/foreign expert certificate, in normal cases this cannot happen unless they get your signature that you confess you no longer work for that particular company.
