is kunming safe for a single woman to explore at night?

My flight arrives there at around midnight and my flight out isn't until ten and a half hours later.  I hate the idea of staying in the airport all that time.  Is there anywhere safe in the city I could go? Do you suppose I could, at least, take a free shuttle to a hotel that has a restaurant and then eat there?  Would they let me do that?  On the other hand, is there a cheap hotel in the airport that I could stay at?  That would be another way of using up my time.Thanks!

Actually, you are not advised to explore the city at midnight alone. You are eligible to the 24h visa-free policy, so you can leave the airport after applying for a stay permit. There are two suggestions:1. Take shuttle bus line 2 to Main Railway Station. The buses operate until 3:00. Then, stay at a hotel nearby. On the next morning, you can go to visit the Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Archway, Nanping Street and other popular attractions. 2. There is no hotel inside the airport terminal building. You can stay at Airport Tian Yuan Hotel at No. 161, Changgang Road. It costs CNY 100 - 200 per night in usual time.

Thank you, Abby, for your advice and your hotel recommendation.  I will look into your suggestions.  It would be great to have an inexpensive hotel room and see a tiny bit of China in the morning.  I appreciate your help!
