Hi Brittany, as the rule goes, you are only allowed to stay in the designated area. In some cities, you can travel around the whole city. In some cities, you can travel within the whole provice. If you transit in Shanghai, Nanjing or Zhejiang, you can even travel in the three provinces. So if you can tell me where you will transit and where you plan to visit, I'll give you a more correct answer.

I would like to see the Great Wall from Beijing on day tour but would be staying overnight in Beijing .

Alright, it's fine. Going to the Great Wall is not considered leaving Beijing.
