9 Hour Layover in Bejiing

Hi!
I'm flying from Bangkok to Beijing, where I have a 9 hour layover, and then onto Vancouver. I plan on doing some site seeing during this time period, and I was wondering if I need to alert the airline in Bangkok, or if I can just apply for the entry permit once I land? Also - can I apply for the 24 hour direct transit or the 72 hour free transit?
Thanks!

Amanda, you are eligible for both 24 hour direct transit and 72 hour free transit, but considering you just have 9-hour transit in Beijing, you may be given the 24 hour direct transit. You need to inform the carrier that you want to use the 24 hour direct transit when you board the plane in Bangkok. After you arrive in Beijing, you can get the direct transit.
If you want to leave the airport for sightseeing, you need to apply for a temporary stay permit at the airport and it’s free of charge.
