About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US Citizen flying from United States to Taiwan to shanghai to Tokyo to United States.

Hi,
I am flying from my home town of San Francisco to Taiwan for a visit. then leaving from taiwan to stay with friends in Shanghai. Then from Shangai I am going to Tokyo before I head back to San Francisco. Could I use the 144 hour free travel stay for Shanghai under this scenario?
