72 hour free transit in China

Can I fly from USA to Beijing, and stay for less than 72 hours, and fly from Beijing back to USA, and not have a Visa? can the 72 hour free transit work for me since I am there less than 72 hours?

Sorry, the 72-hour free transit does not work for you because your travel route is not classed as a valid transit. You can choose to travel back to the USA via a third country to make you eligible for the free transit policy.
