About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

22 hour stopover for Indonesian Passport Holder

My husband & son will be flying China Eastern arriving in Shanghai from Toronto at 7:10pm & their connecting flight to Bali is not until 5:20pm the next day.
With Indonesian Passport, they do not qualify for the 72hr free transit.
I believe they could just stay in the airport for 22 hrs - no problem (any place to sleep?)
BUT, if they did want to check into a hotel in Shanghai, what kind of visa do they need & how to apply?
Is it worth going through the hassle - ie: is there anything to see or do easily in Shanghai the next day before having to get to the airport by probably 2-3pm?

Penny, they are eligible for the 24 hour direct transit at the airport. So they don’t need to apply for any entry permit and they can just apply for a temporary stay permit (it’s free of charge) at the airport and then leave the airport to check in at a hotel.
As for the next day, maybe they can have a short tour in the city. They can visit the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the Bund, or Disneyland Park in Shanghai.

Thank you Cooper - is there any reasonably priced hotel (as well as conveniently located) you could recommend?

Dear, if they arrive at Pudong Airport, they can choose the Jinjiang Inn, or Home Inn.
If they arrive at Hongqiao Airport, they can choose the Home Inn or Hanting Express.
They are near the airport and provide reasonable prices.
