About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need more than the 144 Hour Free Transit to spend a day in Shanghai?

We are arriving by ship in Shanghai, China on Sat., 10/15/16 for 22 hours after leaving Busan, South Korea on 10/14/16. I am on a Grand Asia Tour and will be leaving by ship for Hong Kong and arriving there on 10/18/16. Do I need a VISA to spend less than 22 hours in Shanghai. Is the 144 Hour Free Transit all I need and how do I obtain that in Hawaii?

Eloise, you are eligible for the 144-hour free transit, so the entry permit is not required. However, you can't obtain the free transit when you are in Hawaii. You should apply for it upon arrival at Shanghai. Remeber to tell your carrier your intention to use this policy before the ship arrives.

While all other conditions qualify, I was informed by Princess Cruises that the passenger arriving and leaving Shanghai by the same cruise ship (Diamond Princess) is not considered "Transit" and consequently requires visa. Is this correct? Seems strange. Go figure.
