About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

can exemption be used for a quick visit to Shanghai if I return to the US?

I've been invited to visit a Chinese resident of Shanghai who I met here in the US two years ago.

May I visit her in Shanghai with just a passport--no visa required--if I stay 6 or fewer days and then leave to return to the US?

Or is this 144 hour exemption intended only for passing through China to another nation?

John, in principle, the 144-hour exemption is only available to those who will leave for a destination different from the country of departure. So you have to buy a ticket to another destination or you can return to the US via HK so that you can enjoy this policy.
