Can I do the 72-hour no visa if my flight from Dhaka to Beijing has a Layover in Guangzhou?

My wife and I are on our way back to the USA from Bangladesh. We found a cheap flight into Beijing with a layover in Guangzhou, and then another out of Beijing direct to Chicago. Is there a problem that our flight from Bangladesh stops in another Chinese city on the way to Beijing, which is the only airport we'd want to leave for the 72 hours?
