Q1 Visa?

My husband and I wish to move to China to live with his mother in Shanghai. My husband is a Chinese citizen and we got married here in Ireland. Does he write the invitation letter even though he is not currently in PRC? Or should I go over on an L type and switch to Q1 with permanent residency after I get there?

Katie, as your husband is not currently in PRC, I'm afraid he can't write the invitation letter to you. You can ask his mother to write you this letter. It's not advised to go there on an L type and switch to Q1 type. The chance is not 100% anyway.

His mother can write invitation letter for you. You then enter on a Q1 type and apply for temporary residence permit. Currently, you are not qualified for permanent residency as I think. The marriage certificate will be used when applying for the temporary residence permit. You should get it notarized first and then take it to the embassy for authentication before you travel to PRC.

You can provide your marriage certificate and your husband’s household registration book as well as a copy of your husband's ID card to prove that.

Thank you for your response. So his Mom can write an invitation letter for me and I can then switch to Permanent Residency over there? Will I need to supply my marriage certificate? Also, as the marriage was done in Ireland, does he need to go to the embassy to get it verified or can this be done in China?

Thank you Mark. So do you know what proof I need to prove that my Mother in Law is actually my Mother in Law?
