144 visa free transit in Shanghai for US citizen

I am a U.S Citizen. Traveling to Tokyo from U.S. then to Shanghai for 5 days then back to U.S. Will I be able to use 144 hour free transit? Do I need to do anything in Tokyo before I get on the Japan Airlines flight to Shanghai? Will JAL require anything from me?

You are able to use the 144 hour free transit.
When you board the plane in Tokyo, you need to inform the airlines that you want to use the 144 hour free transit, and then the airline can declare your request to the immigration office for processing. You should take your passport with you
Your passport will be required by JAL.
