Could someone tell me something about studying in Haikou?

I'm not asking about universities itself but more about climate of the city, cleaness of putonghua on the streets and so on. I'm afraid of coming there, because I don't want to go to some silly holiday resort where everything is brand new and shiny. I want to see real China, old men playing majhong and drinking tea.
