About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Arrive by train leave by plane

On the way in, i can use the 24 hour direct transit as i land at capital airport and leave for pyongyang 5 hours later.
Can i use it on the way back? I travel by train from pyongyang thru manchuria to beijing. Arriving 1700 in beijing. Leaving the next day at 1030 from capital. The rule says from train to place within 24 hrs. I am not sure. Please advice

Jochum, if your total layover time in PRC is less than 24 hour on the way back, you can use the 24 hour direct transit. If not, I’m afraid you should apply for a transit G type ahead of your trip.

Is the same true in reverse? US citizen. Nonstop flight to Beijing (PEK). Am then taking train from Beijing to Ulanbataar, Mongolia. Total time in China is <24 hours. Do I need a visa; or will the 24 hour rule apply?

And if yes: how do I ensure the airport agents are aware of this policy?

Aaron, if so, you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit in Beijing. When you arrive at the airport, you can just go to the immigration inspection office to apply for it and the consular officers there know this policy.
