Need China entry permit if stop-over in HK?

I hold a UK passport and currently live and work in Singapore. If I stop over (transit only) in HK before taking the next flight to Shanghai for 4 nights, will I still need a single entry tourist visa?

Scott, the thing for sure is that you don't need the entry permit for Hong Kong. Besides, if you leave Shanghai for a third country which is different from HK, you can enjoy the 144h free transit policy there, so that the single-entry permit is not required either.
