About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Arriving by cruise ship into Shanghai but leaving 40 hours later via Pudong airport back to the US.

We are Americans with valid US Passports. My wife and I are arriving by cruise ship into Shanghai (8AM) March 13, 2016. We are staying overnight in a hotel, then leaving in the late afternoon ( 6:30 PM) the next day (March 14) to fly back from Shanghai to the US. We will be in Shanghai for possibly 36-40 hours. Do we need a visa or does the 144 hour free transit apply?

Francis, what is your last stop before entering Shanghai? If it's not part of the US or China, you can make use of the 144-hour free transit program.

Our last stop on the cruise before Shanghai port is a stop in Xiamen, China 2 days before ( 1 day cruising before Shanghai).

So you don't qualify for the 144-hour free transit policy.
