i am travelling from the usa to hong kong for a week.

Question

Can I purchase a roundtrip ticket to Guangzhou?  Meaning go from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and apply for the 72hr visa?  I will be returning to Hong Kong for onward travel back to the USA.

Harris, you mean that you will fly back to HK after going to Guangzhou? If yes, you don’t qualify for the 72 hour free transit because according to the policy, after transiting in a Chinese city, you should fly to a third country or region different from the one you fly in.
