About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am cruising arriving from Japan to Shanghai for a 1 day stay in Shanghai..Do I need a visa

Dear, in principle, you don't need it because you are eligible for the 24h free transit. But you need to confirm this with the cruise company in case it doesn't allow you to board on the ship.
