Flying in and out via Beijing, do i need a visa?

I am holding a Canadian passport and would be going to Philippines via Beijing. I saw in the post earlier that you don't need one. What's the maximum connecting time? If I have 48 hours in between, can I step out of the airport for few hours? Or should I just stay in the airport?

VJ, if you make use of 72 hours free transit policy, then you needn't apply anything in advance. Upon arrival, you just follow the leading signs to reach the counter where you can apply for the free transit. Just submit your passport and onward air ticket and then you will get a stamp on your passport. With this stamp, you can exit the airport.
