About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

U.S. Passport: SFO to Pudong (China Eastern Airlines)

Pudong to Chiang Mai, Thailand (final destination). Would this itinerary fall under the 72-hour Visa-free policy?

Also, on the return trip from Thailand to Pudong to SFO (final destination), is entry permit required? I assumed not, but want to ask just in case.

Meg, you only stop in Shanghai on both ways, right? If so, you can apply for the 72-hour free transit both times.
