20 hr stopover in Beijing

Hello, just to be clear, I will be stopping in Beijing for 20 hrs with a friend (she is a German passport holder and I have a New Zealand passport ). We are flying from brisbane to munich. We want to visit the city for a few hours, are we best to apply for the 72hr visa or can we use the 24hr one? Thank you!
