About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visiting from Thailand.

I will be in Thailand and want to visit a friend in Shanghai. How can I use the 72 hour transit visa to do this? I can leave and return from different cities in Thailand. Or is a stopover in Hong Kong on either way good enough?

Michael, a stopover on either way will make you eligible for the free transit. You can fly to Shanghai direct from Thailand first. After your short transit in Shanghai, you should fly to HK and then fly back to Thailand. In this case, you can enjoy 72 hour free transit in mainland PRC. Besides, Chile passport holders can enjoy free entry to HK for a stay of no more than 90 days.
