I'm a US citizen visiting Mexico city, can I apply for a Chinese tourist visa at the embassy?

I'm a US citizen currently visiting my resident husband in Mexico city under the 180 day visa free period. I am going to Korea straight from Mexico city in two weeks and I would love to visit China during my trip since I am already making the 14hr flight. Is it at all possible for me to apply for a tourist visa to China from Mexico city if I am not a permanent resident / visa holder of Mexico? I would take advantage of the visa free transit but my flight is already round trip from Korea so I cannot enter / exit out of a different country.

You can have a try but it's not guaranteed. Usually, one cannot get a China visa in a third country/region if he or she is only a short-term visitor there.
