About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visiting China from London via Hong-Kong

Proposed itinerary is London to Hong-Kong staying for 3 days there. Then flight from Hong-Kong to Nanjing for 10 day visit in China. Return flight from Beijing via Hong-Kong to London but only transiting in Hong-Kong for a few hours to connect to return flight to London. Is this allowed or would we have to fly direct from Beijing back to London or connect at any other airport in the region other than Hong-Kong?

I can see that you understand where the problem with your itinerary is. It is the fact and the very basic requirement of 240 hour visa free transit that the immediate points before and after your mainland China visit are in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). So, you cannot use your currently planned itinerary because both of your immediate points are located in Hong Kong. However, you can slightly alter/adapt your itinerary by introducing Macau, for example... You can exit mainland China from some place within mainland China to Macau and then your itinerary becomes eligible. Since Macau and Hong Kong are so close to each other, you will just take a bus or ferry from Macau to Hong Kong as soon as you arrive in Macau. Beside Macau you can use any other country or eligible territory to be your immediate point after China, just not Hong Kong because you have used it as your first immediate point. Hope this helps and I wish you a nice visit to China.
